To celebrate our 150th Anniversary Brooks England are releasing a series of our most iconic saddles resplendent in an all copper frame, hand hammered copper rivets and presented in Special Edition packaging.
The B15 Swallow is a faithful reproduction of a saddle specifically conceived with the sporting cyclist in mind, the result being a timeless design widely regarded as the precursor of all modern racing saddles. This saddle was originally patented as long ago as 1937. At that time a great many such Brooks Saddles were exported to the continent, where they were very popular amongst professional cyclists competing in the various tours and stage races. Today's Swallow still proudly bears the original patent declaration on the tensioning plate beneath the svelte leather upper. This text retains the word “deposé”, the patent application for the Swallow having initially been registered in the Paris patent office.
The timeless design of the Swallow remains virtually unchanged today, Brooks only concession to modernity being the recent introduction of a lighter model. The Swallow Titanium, features lightweight titanium rails for a significant weight reduction over the traditional Swallow Chrome, although in all other respects the Swallow models are the same as each other, and indeed exactly the same as their historical namesakes.
In 2016, Brooks England have planned a long list of activities to celebrate this great achievement. Included is the release of a number of 150th Anniversary Edition products.
Brooks has created a series of their most iconic saddles resplendent in all copper frames with hand-hammered copper rivets and black leather. The models available are the classic best-selling B17, its touring counterpart the Flyer, the B67 for city bikes, the B33 for heavy duty, and the Swallow for racing, all delivered in Special Edition packaging.
Leisure bike saddles are designed with comfort over weight in mind, this means they may have more padding than a svelte racing saddle and may weigh a few grams more, but should provide a higher level of comfort for the leisure rider. A leisure saddle is usually suitable for someone who rides for up to an hour at a time, if you ride over this length of time a performance saddle may be a better choice. The reason for this is that a leisure saddle is often wider and provides a larger seating area, this causes the legs to be placed further apart than when using a racing saddle, and this can become less comfortable than a more racy saddle over longer distances.
The Brooks bike saddle story started way back in 1866, a young man of just 19 years of age was said to have bought 'one of those new-fangled velocipedes' which was fitted with a wooden saddle, this proved excruciating. As luck would have it his father made leather saddles for horses, so the young man known as John Boultbee Brooks set to work in his fathers workshop designing and developing a comfortable saddle from leather.
The rest they say is history....
Brooks experience in saddle making goes right back to the beginning - back to the period of solid tyres - and is unequalled by any other house in the world.
That said, they recognise the fact that they cannot rely on their past history alone, so they still build saddles with the same attitude as when they started, 'quality first', both in materials and manufacture. The testament to this is that there are still saddles in active use today, made many many years ago.
